Charlie’s Story

Charlie Tygard is a Nashville native who has made a difference in the lives of the citizens of Nashville as an elected public servant, the Executive Director of a local youth non-profit organization, and as a successful businessman.

Charles R. Tygard, Jr. was born January 6, 1951, in Nashville, son of Charles and Martha Tygard. A graduate of Parmer Elementary School and later Montgomery Bell Academy in 1969, Charlie excelled in the classroom and at several extra-curricular activities. He was the captain of MBA’s varsity basketball team, a staff member of his high school’s newspaper The Bell Ringer and a member of the yearbook staff.

As a youth Charlie served his community as a member of Troop 46 of the Boy Scouts of America, earning the rank of Eagle Scout. Charlie earned a B.A. degree in Business Administration and Economics from Vanderbilt University in 1973, and is a member of the Sigma Nu Fraternity. He is married to the former Judy Brooks of Nashville (Overton High School) and they have two children, Jill and Jennifer. Jill and Glenn Mertes have two children, Megan (3 ½ years old) and Matthew (1 ½ years old). Jenny is a teacher in the Metropolitan Nashville Public School system. The Tygards attend the Bellevue Presbyterian Church.
